WordPress: Creating a Custom/Static HomePage

Article Tools

What is a Custom HomePage?

By default, WordPress shows your most recent posts on the front page of your site. This is known as a “blog” layout and is the default style for all WordPress blogs. However, some WordPress users want to have a static front page or splash page as the front page instead. This “static front page” look is common for those who wish to not have a “blog” look to their site, giving it a more CMS (content management system) feel.

Many of our themes come with custom homepage support. This means we designed both a frontend static page and also a blog layout page. To find out whether or not your downloaded theme includes custom homepage support, simply look at the .PSD files. If there are two PSD files (e.g. index psd) + (blog psd) in the distribution package, then it would most likely indicate a theme with custom homepage support.

How to install your theme and setup a custom homepage:

1. Upload the theme into the /wp-content/themes/ folder. Remember, the theme should have its own folder name. It should look something like this: /wp-content/themes/newly-uploaded-theme/

Note:
We highly recommend you upload these files using FTP software. Using online upload tools via your web browser may cause upload problems.
2. Activate the theme in your Admin/dashboard
3. In the Admin/dashboard area click Pages -> Add New Page, create two pages:

Create a new page and name it: “Home

In Attributes, under the Templates field choose MyHome

-         Click Save.

-          Create another new page and name it: “Blog

-         Click Save.

4. In the Admin/dashboard area go to Settings -> Reading

- Under “Front page displays” choose “A static page“.

- Choose Front page “Home

- Choose Posts page “Blog

See example image below.

Congratulations! You now have a blog with a custom homepage!

Customizing the Custom HomePage

To configure how many posts are shown on the custom homepage and from which categories, goto [Appearance -> Theme Options]

To directly modify the custom homepage/static frontpage layout, you will need to edit a filed called [myhome.php]. This is found in the theme’s root folder.
